Built like a brick!
I've always been impressed with APC's build quality, and when I had the opportunity to test out this model in my home office I jumped at the chance. This device will protect your computer and related accessories from inadvertent shutdown, or from getting fried in a power surge. They aren't cheap, but it is a very solid and sophisticated (and HEAVY) device. I suggest that if you want to rack-mount this, only do so in a floor standing unit - and near the bottom of the cabinet. I'd be very hesitant to mount this on a wall-mounted rack. It weighs around 75 pounds and is difficult to move around, but once it's set up you can use it quickly. It took about 15 minutes to set up, including installing and running the control software. You can configure this device to shut down items in sequence, or all at once - fully - or a restart. Customer review : good ol' APC UPS, but with not-so-good software
This rack-mount SmartUPS will feel very familiar to anybody who has used the venerable SmartUPS product line, which has a deserved reputation for durable, enterprise-grade power protection. Unfortunately, the bundled Powerchute software has not improved with age, and in the SMT series, APC has made it harder to use 3rd-party software like apcupsd. (Note the software is only for monitoring and management, so its usage is "optional" as far as power protection goes)
Unlike my older SmartUPS units, this one has a small LCD panel with interactive menus (eg, for self-test settings) and some data display (load, runtime, battery age, etc). The input power cord connects to a normal 5-15 socket (normal US wall-power socket). In the Smart-UPS series, you can't go much bigger than this without needing to upgrading to at least a 5-20 socket and 20A circuit (less common). There's both USB and RS-232 console connectors, but no ethernet. There's a "green mode" that runs at a higher...
